Some are called to flight, others to fight

Cardinal Mercier quotes Saint Bernard saying:
Men of the cloister, be not too quick to judge those who, being obliged to live in the midst of the multitude, are sometimes found wanting in reserve or in circumspection. You [being monks] keep guard over yourself, you watch over yourself: and it is well that you should do so. Others, however, go to rescue the multitude: and that is even better, bearing witness to a greater virility. Do you sometimes notice faults in their life, I mean their highs and lows, a letting-go in their words, their food, their sleep, their laughter, their anger, or their judgment? An inconsistency in their life or conduct? Just remember that charity covers over a multitude of sins. (Super Cantica, Sermo XII)
