29 November, Mass of the Commending of the Blessed Virgin Mary

ephesus1.jpg
Pope Benedict XVI will be celebrating Holy Mass today in a open place adjacent to the shrine of the Holy House of Mother Mary near Ephesus. Archbishop Marini’s presentation suggests that the Mass will be that of the Commendatio Beatae Mariae Virginis, # 13 in the Collectio Missarum de Beata Maria Virgine. Here follows my own translation of the texts:
ENTRANCE ANTIPHON
MR
The Lord is high above all nations;
and his glory above the heavens.
Who makes the Blessed Virgin to dwell in the Church,
the joyful mother of children (cf. Ps 112:4, 9).
COLLECT
Lord, Holy Father,
who decreed the salvation of the human race
in the Paschal Mystery,
grant that we whom Jesus Christ dying upon the cross
entrusted to his Virgin Mother
may be numbered among your adopted sons.
Through the same our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, forever and ever.

GENERAL INTERCESSIONS
That Catholic and Orthodox Christians in every place
may imitate the obedience of Saint John to Jesus Crucified
by taking His All-Holy Mother into their hearts and into their homes,
to the Lord we pray: Christ, hear us. R. CHRIST, GRACIOUSLY HEAR US.
That Pope Benedict XVI
may be preserved from every danger,
today and all the days of his life,
beneath the protecting mantle of the Holy Mother of God,
to the Lord we pray: Christ, hear us. R. CHRIST, GRACIOUSLY HEAR US.
That in the presence of the Blessed Virgin Mary
the lonely may find companionship,
the weak, strength,
the sick, healing,
the fearful, courage
and the tempted, peace,
to the Lord we pray: Christ, hear us. R. CHRIST, GRACIOUSLY HEAR US.
That the Blessed Virgin Mary may be accepted more and more
as the Reconciler of Peoples,
the Mother of Unity,
and the Queen of Peace,
to the Lord we pray: Christ, hear us. R. CHRIST, GRACIOUSLY HEAR US.
That it may be given us
to find the Virgin Mary in humble prayer,
to live with her in silence,
and to magnify the Lord with her in thanksgiving,
to the Lord we pray: Christ, hear us. R. CHRIST, GRACIOUSLY HEAR US.
COLLECT AT THE GENERAL INTERCESSIONS
Almighty and merciful God,
who, at the appointed time,
chose to hide the Virgin Mother of Your Son
in the house of John His Beloved Disciple,
mercifully grant that we, like Saint John,
make so take her into our lives
as to make of our dwellings houses of Mary
and tabernacles of adoration in spirit and in truth.
Through Christ our Lord.
OFFERTORY ANTIPHON
GR
Be mindful, O Virgin Mother of God,
when you stand in the sight of the Lord,
to speak good things for us,
and to turn away his wrath from us (cf. Jer 18:20).
PRAYER OVER THE OFFERINGS
Receive, O Lord, these gifts joyfully offered
that they may become the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ
who, being nailed to the wood of the cross
entrusted, in John, all his disciples as sons to the Virgin
and elected them as the vicars of his love towards his Mother.
Who lives and reigns forever and ever.
PREFACE
It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation,
always and everywhere to give You thanks,
Lord, Holy Father, almighty and eternal God:
For at the foot of the cross of Jesus,
by His own sacred testament,
an intimate bond of love was forged
between the Blessed Virgin and His faithful disciples:
the mother is entrusted to the disciples as their mother,
and the disciples receive the Mother
as the Master’s precious inheritance.
She is to be for all ages the mother of believers,
and they at all times will fly to her full of assurance.
She, in loving them, loves the Son,
and they, in listening to the counsels of the Mother,
keep the words of the Master.
Through Whom the hosts of Angels adore Your majesty,
rejoicing eternally before Your face.
We pray You, let our voices be heard with theirs,
as we sing with joyful praise:
COMMUNION ANTIPHON
MR
I endure all things for the sake of the elect,
that they also may obtain the salvation
which is in Christ Jesus, with heavenly glory (2 Tim 2:10).
PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION
Let this heavenly table, O Lord,
increase filial love within us,
for here we are refreshed by the Body and Blood of Christ
who, in dying upon the altar of the Cross,
commended Himself into your hands
and entrusted us to His Virgin Mother as sons.
Who lives and reigns forever and ever.
