10 November, Mass of Saint Leo the Great, Pope
ENTRANCE ANTIPHON
MR
The Lord made to him a covenant of peace
to be the prince of his people
that the dignity of priesthood should be to him forever (Sir 45:30).
COLLECT
O God,
who never permit the gates of hell to prevail against your Church,
founded on the rock of the Apostles,
grant, we beseech you,
through the intercession of Pope Saint Leo,
that, standing upright in your truth,
she may be strengthened by a lasting peace.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, forever and ever.
GENERAL INTERCESSIONS
That the Church in Rome and throughout the world
may be graced with humility and governed by charity,
so as to prevail against the assaults of evil
and ever glory in the promises of Christ,
to the Lord we pray: Christ, hear us. R. CHRIST, GRACIOUSLY HEAR US.
That our holy father, Pope Benedict,
strengthened by the prayer of the Church,
may continue to be the voice of Peter
confessing Christ and serving the unity of all Christians,
to the Lord we pray: Christ, hear us. R. CHRIST, GRACIOUSLY HEAR US.
That the leaders of nations and all public servants
may be defended against internal strife, corruption, and greed,
so as to carry out the mandates given them
with integrity, generosity, and courage,
to the Lord we pray: Christ, hear us. R. CHRIST, GRACIOUSLY HEAR US.
That those who are shaken in their faith may be upheld;
that the hungry and the homeless may find relief as the cold of winter sets in;
and that the sick may be cared for with wisdom and compassion,
to the Lord we pray: Christ, hear us. R. CHRIST, GRACIOUSLY HEAR US.
That young artists and artisans imbued with the spirit of the liturgy
may continue the work of the Saint Leo League
founded by Adé Béthune in Newport, Rhode Island,
and so present the world with sacred signs
of the goodness, truth, and beauty of Christ,
to the Lord we pray: Christ, hear us. R. CHRIST, GRACIOUSLY HEAR US.
That, like Pope Saint Leo, we may confess
that “what was visible in our Saviour has passed over into his mysteries,”
and so rejoice to find Him today in Word and Sacrament,
to the Lord we pray: Christ, hear us. R. CHRIST, GRACIOUSLY HEAR US.
COLLECT AT THE GENERAL INTERCESSIONS
Almighty and ever-living God,
grant that your Church,
following the teaching of Pope Saint Leo the Great,
may hold fast the great mystery of our redemption,
and adore the one Christ, true God and true Man,
neither divided from our humanity
nor separate from your Godhead.
Through the same Christ our Lord.
OFFERTORY ANTIPHON
GR
Behold, I have given my words in your mouth:
lo, I have set you over the nations, and over kingdoms,
to root up, and to pull down,
and to build, and to plant (Jer 1:9–10).
PRAYER OVER THE OFFERINGS
By the gifts of our offering, Lord,
we beseech you: graciously illumine your Church,
that your flock may prosper in every place,
and its shepherds, under your guidance, be pleasing to your name.
Through Christ our Lord.
PREFACE
Truly it is right and just, our duty and our salvation,
always, here and everywhere to give you thanks,
Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God.
Three times your Son Jesus Christ asked Peter if he loved him,
before finding him worthy to be the Shepherd of his sheep.
In succession to Peter, Christ chose Saint Leo,
to be Bishop of the Roman Church,
to preside in charity over the universal assembly of believers
and, made strong in faith himself,
to strengthen the faith of his brothers and sisters.
And so, united with him and in the joy of his memory,
together with all the angels and saints,
we raise the hymn of your praise:
COMMUNION ANTIPHON
MR
Peter said to Jesus:
You are Christ, the Son of the living God.
Jesus answered: You are Peter,
and upon this rock I will build my Church (Mt 16: 16-18).
PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION
Having nourished your Church, O Lord,
by this holy refreshment,
we beseech you, in your kindness, to govern her,
so that directed by your powerful rule,
she may receive an increase of liberty,
and persevere in the integrity of her religion.
Through Christ our Lord.
