\nAmong the mectildian-benedictine practices that our monastery has come to cherish is that of the Amende honorable<\/em> (Act of Honourable Amendment): a prayer of adoration and reparation pronounced aloud before the Most Holy Sacrament. Here is the prayer that I offered today following Vespers.<\/small>
\nLord Jesus Christ<\/strong>,
\nGod from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,
\nbegotten of the Father before the daystar,
\nand consubstantial with Him,
\nborn in the fulness of time of the Immaculate Virgin Mary,
\nby the power of the Holy Spirit,
\nI adore Thee,
\nwho art truly present here,
\nand, out of my own poverty and weakness,
\nI desire to make reparation
\nfor those who do not adore Thee in this wondrous Sacrament,
\nand for those who deny the mystery of Thy real presence.
\nI would make reparation as well
\nfor those who approach Thee without reverence,
\nfor those who touch, and handle,
\nand receive Thy adorable Body
\nwith coldness, with indifference,
\nand with little awareness of the immensity of Thy charity
\nburning in this Most Holy Sacrament.
\nThou art here upon the altar
\njust as Thou wert in the cave of Bethlehem,
\nwhere, wrapped in swaddling bands,
\nThou wast laid in the manger as upon an altar,
\nthe innocent Lamb made ready for the sacrifice,
\nthe Living Bread come down from heaven,
\nand set forth upon the altars of Thy Church
\nfor the nourishment of those
\nwhom Thou hast created to partake of Thy Flesh and Blood
\nand, in so doing, to become one with Thee.
\nHere, though Thy glory be veiled, yet is it visible,
\nfor one cannot gaze upon the Sacred Host
\nwithout reflecting, as in a mirror,
\nsomething of the radiance of Thy glory
\nhidden beneath Its humble appearance.
\nI unite my adoration first to that of the Virgin Mother and of Saint Joseph,
\ndesiring, in some way, to adore Thee with them
\nand to abide in their company.
\nI adore Thee in communion with the Angelic Choirs
\nwho filled the skies of Bethlehem on that most holy night,
\nand I adore Thee together with the lowly shepherds
\nwho, crossing over to Bethlehem, found there
\nthat everything was just as the Angel told them.
\nReceive my adoration here,
\nand in every church become the true House of Bread,
\nby reason of Thine adorable presence,
\nthus prolonging the mystery of Bethlehem
\nthrough space and through time,
\nfrom the rising of the sun to its setting.
\nBowing low before Thee,
\nI adore and I submit to this mystery of Thy omnipotence become so fragile,
\nof Thy glory so hidden,
\nand of Thy love so despised.
\nLet all that is in me surrender in faith to what I see before my eyes,
\nand to what I do not see,
\nfor Thou art here,
\nwho livest and reignest with the Father,
\nin the unity of the Holy Spirit,
