\nthat we might set our hearts on Thee.
\nIn this is consecration,
\nnot that that we have consecrated ourselves to Thee,
\nbut that Thou hast set Thy Heart on us.
\n“For their sake,” Thou didst say,
\n“I consecrate Myself,
\nthat they also may be consecrated in truth” (Jn 17:19).<\/p>\n

This the Beloved Disciple understood
\nnot by any labour of the mind
\nbut by the resting his head
\non the Heart of the Lamb.
\n“In this is charity,
\nnot as though we had loved God,
\nbut because He hath first loved us,
\nand sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins” (1 Jn 4:10).<\/p>\n

This he learned
\nnot by searching far and wide,
\nbut by abiding with Mary near the cross,
\nthere to gaze on the “One whom they have pierced” (Jn 19:37).
\nThis he learned, John the eagle,
\ngazing unblinking into the Sun
\nthat rose each day before his eyes
\nin the Breaking of the Bread.
\n“This is My Body which is given for you.
\nDo this for a commemoration of Me.
\nIn like manner the chalice also,
\nafter He had supped, saying:
\n‘This is the Chalice, the new testament in my blood,
\nwhich shall be shed for you'” (Lk 22:19-20).<\/p>\n

Teach us, John of the seeing heart,
\nhow to gaze with unveiled faces
\non the Face here veiled,
\nthat we may discern in the Bread broken and given
\nthe Eucharistic Heart, the water and the blood (cf. Jn 19:34).<\/p>\n

He who gazes
\nis drawn into mysteries hidden from the wise and clever,
\nto “what no eye hath seen, nor ear heard,
\nnor the heart of man conceived,
\nwhat things God hath prepared for those who love him” (1 Cor 2:9).<\/p>\n

These things children understand
\nand those who like them
\ngaze through the crystal of a pure heart.
\nFor this is given the water and the blood
\nthat we with eyes bathed in light
\nmight look upon the Sacred Host
\nand see the Face, the Heart of Love.<\/p>\n

“Come to me, all you who labour and are heavy laden”
\n–Love’s invitation —
\n“and I will refresh you” (Mt 11:28).
\nNo crushing deity here.
\nNo annihilating power.
\nHere lies bare the weakness of Love
\nand the meekness of one Humble unto death.<\/p>\n

Love waits
\nnot for our gaze alone
\nbut for the “Yes” of hearts already claimed by Love.
\nOn us He hath set his heart,
