I first began reading Clement of Alexandria about forty years ago.  I remember going to share my discovery of Clement with Father D.B., a wise and kind Anglican clergyman at New Haven&#8217;s magnificent Christ Church. Clement of Alexandria has lost nothing of his freshness for me.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Then, there is today&#8217;s Collect.  It&#8217;s very difficult to translate elegantly.  Most translations settle for a paraphrase. The prayer asks that we be preserved from doubt and made constant in faith and in hope.<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>At Matins: The Lesson of the Second Nocturn<\/strong><br \/>\nFrom <em>The Exhortation to the Heathen of Clement of Alexandria<\/em>, Chapter IX<br \/>\n<strong>The Soul&#8217;s Awakening<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Lord, with ceaseless assiduity,<br \/>\nexhorts, terrifies, urges, rouses, admonishes;<br \/>\nHe awakes from the sleep of darkness,<br \/>\nand raises up those who have wandered in error.<br \/>\n&#8220;Awake,&#8221; He says, &#8220;thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead,<br \/>\nand Christ shall give thee light,&#8221; &#8212;<br \/>\nChrist, the Sun of the Resurrection,<br \/>\nHe &#8220;who was born before the morning star,&#8221;<br \/>\nand with His beams bestows life.<br \/>\n<strong>Despise Not the Word<\/strong><br \/>\nLet no one then despise the Word, lest he unwittingly despise himself.<br \/>\nFor the Scripture somewhere says,<br \/>\n&#8220;To-day, if ye will hear His voice, harden not your hearts.<br \/>\nThe Lord, in His love to man, invites all men to the knowledge of the truth,<br \/>\nand for this end sends the Paraclete.<br \/>\n<strong>His Only Work: Our Salvation<\/strong><br \/>\nNo one will be so impressed by the exhortations of any of the saints,<br \/>\nas he is by the words of the Lord Himself, the Lover of man.<br \/>\nFor this, and nothing but this, is His only work&#8211;the salvation of man.<br \/>\nTherefore He Himself, urging them on to salvation, cries,<br \/>\n&#8220;The kingdom of heaven is at hand.&#8221;<br \/>\n<strong>Toward Unity in Love<\/strong><br \/>\nHear, then, ye who are far off, hear ye who are near:<br \/>\nthe word has not been hidden from any;<br \/>\nthe light is common, it shines &#8220;on all men.&#8221;<br \/>\nLet us hasten to salvation, to regeneration;<br \/>\nlet us who are many hasten<br \/>\nthat we may be brought together into one love,<br \/>\naccording to the union of the essential unity;<br \/>\nand let us, by being made good, conformably follow after unity,<br \/>\nseeking after the unity of The One.<br \/>\n<strong>Christ, Our Choir-Leader<\/strong><br \/>\nThe union of many in one,<br \/>\nissuing in the production of divine harmony out of a medley of sounds and division, becomes one symphony following one choir-leader and teacher,<br \/>\nthe Word, reaching and resting in the same truth,<br \/>\nand crying Abba, Father.<br \/>\nThis, the true utterance of His children,<br \/>\nGod accepts with gracious welcome,<br \/>\nthe first-fruits He receives from them.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><u>TODAY&#8217;S COLLECT<\/u><\/div>\n<p><em>or<\/em><br \/>\nO God, who in the resurrection of Christ,<br \/>\ndost restore us to eternal life,<br \/>\ngive Thy people constancy in faith and hope,<br \/>\nthat, without wavering,<br \/>\nthey may await the fulfillment<br \/>\nof what Thou hast revealed and promised.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The patristic reading at Matins really struck me this morning.
