\"Adoration<\/a>
\nI came across this hymn for Compline in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament exposed in Les heures du Saint-Sacrement<\/em> published at Lille in 1856 for L’Association de l’Adoration Perpétuelle<\/em> of the Bénédictines du Saint-Sacrement<\/em>. The Association was erected as an archconfraternity by Blessed Pope Pius IX on May 25, 1851. The hymn can be sung to any of the usual Gregorian melodies for Te lucis ante terminum<\/em>. I give my own translation in italics. With apologies to Father Z of WDPRS fame, it is not slavishly literal. Dear Vincent, would you like to do a metrical translation?
\nIesu, sub ara victima,
\nVerum Deum quem credimus,
\nQui carne nos pascis die,
\nIn nocte nostra sis quies.<\/strong>
\nO Jesu, our altar’s sacrifice
\nWhom we believe to be our very God,
\nBy day Thy flesh becomes our food,
\nBy night be Thou our heart’s repose.<\/em>
\nSis mentium pax et cibus,
\nEt dulce robur cordium;
\nSint templa sancti Spiritus,
\nQuae consecrasti corpora.<\/strong>
\nBe Thou the peace and nourishment of our souls,
\nAnd of our hearts the gentle strength,
\nOur bodies, by Thy consecration,
\nMake temples of the Holy Ghost.<\/em>
\nDum nos quiete recreas,
\nSupplex precaris hostia;
\nLocus quietis intimae
\nNostris sit ara cordibus.<\/strong>
\nWhile we slumber, Thou makest us anew,
\nThy pleading for us, O Victim, ceaseth not;
