A Pentecost Meditation<\/big><\/strong><\/div>\n

Alleluia!
\nToday the Spirit of the Lord has invaded the cosmos and filled it!
\nLife spills out of the Cenacle
\nand, like a torrent of wine,
\ncourses through the streets of Jerusalem.
\nGod arises and His enemies are scattered;
\nthose that hate Him flee before his face,
\nand those that love Him sing: Alleluia!
\nToday He who came down to see Babel’s tower
\nand confused the speech of the proud
\nvisits the Upper Room.
\nHe unties the tongues of the humble
\nand unites into one holy people those long divided by sin.
\nAmazed at what she sees and hears,
\nthe Church intones her birthday song: Alleluia!
\nToday He who on Sinai descended in fire,
\ncausing rocks to quake and peaks to pale,
\ndescends upon Jerusalem;
\ntongues of fire dance over the heads of those
\nwho, cloistered in the Cenacle, waited to meet their God
\nand at His coming, they cry out: Alleluia.
\nToday the valley of dry bones
\nbegins to stir, to rattle, and to reverberate.
\nBehold, I will cause the Spirit to enter you,
\nand you shall live:
\nand they lived and stood upon their feet,
\nan exceeding great host
\nsinging: Alleluia!
\nToday the Cenacle sealed like tomb
\nopens, a joyful Mother’s fruitful womb.
\nNone was ever born of the Spirit
\nwho did not take his birth from her,
\nand each, claiming from her the springs of his life,
\ncalls her forever glorious, repeating: Alleluia!
\nToday the Spirit is poured out in superabundance;
\ntoday sons and daughters prophesy;
\ntoday old men dream dreams and young men see visions;
\ntoday menservants and maidservants
\njoin the choir to chant with one many-tongued voice: Alleluia!
\nToday the Virgin whom the Spirit covered with His shadow
\nis wrapped in Love and crowned in flame.
\nToday the Woman who interceded at Cana
\ntastes New Wine, for the Hour has come.
\nToday the Mother who stood watching by the Tree
\nremembers the stream of water and of blood
\nand filled with sweetness, cries: Alleluia!
\nToday the Spirit helps us in our weakness
\nand we who do not know to pray as we ought,
\npray in a way that is wonderful and new;
\nfor now the Spirit Himself intercedes for us
\nwith sighs too deep for words.
\nIn the valley of the shadow of death
\nthere rises the canticle of life: Alleluia!
\nToday, for the poor there is a Father,
\nfor the destitute a Treasury,
\nfor hearts grown dark an inblazing of brightness.
\nToday, for those who weep there comes the Best of Comforters,
\nfor the lonely, there arrives a gentle Guest,
\nfor the worn and weary there is a refreshment so sweet
\nthat even they begin to sing: Alleluia!
\nToday, for workers there is repose,
\nfor those scorched in the heat of discord, refreshment,
\nfor those brought low by too great a weight of sorrow, solace,
\nand for those with tears to shed,
\na chalice ready to receive them.
\nToday there is no one who cannot say: Alleluia!
\nToday, even where there is nothing good
\nGoodness elects to dwell;
\nand where there is nothing holy
\nHoliness makes a tabernacle,
\nso that the broken, the sad, and the powerless
\nfind their voices to sing: Alleluia!
\nToday, there is a balm for every wound,
\na dew sprinkled over every dryness;
\na cleansing water for every stain.
\nToday, the stubborn heart learns to bend
\nand the stiff spine learns to bow.
\nIn the twinkling of an eye the frozen are thawed
\nand icy hearts warmed through and through,
\nmaking them declare as never before: Alleluia!
\nToday there are Seven Gifts
\nlavishly given for each according to his need:
\nWisdom for the foolish,
\nUnderstanding for the dull,
\nCounsel for the hesitant,
\nFortitude for the weak,
\nPiety for the feckless,
\nand Fear of the Lord for those who have forgotten to adore,
\nsaying humbly: Alleluia
\nToday for sinners there is forgiveness,
\nfor the stranger a home,
\nfor the hungry a Holy Table,
\nfor the thirsty a river of living water,
\nand for every mouth the long-awaited Kiss.
\nToday heaven is poured over the face of the earth,
\nwhile the children of men in amazement sing: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
