{"id":3575,"date":"2009-04-12T14:30:22","date_gmt":"2009-04-12T14:30:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vultuschristi.org\/index.php\/2009\/04\/the-newness-that-comes-from-yo\/"},"modified":"2009-04-12T14:30:22","modified_gmt":"2009-04-12T14:30:22","slug":"the-newness-that-comes-from-yo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vultuschristi.org\/index.php\/2009\/04\/the-newness-that-comes-from-yo\/","title":{"rendered":"The Newness That Comes From Your Spirit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\" style=\"display: inline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/vultuschristi.org\/08_women.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"08_women.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/vultuschristi.org\/08_women-thumb-300x404.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"404\" class=\"mt-image-right\" style=\"float: right; margin: 0 0 20px 20px;\" \/><\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<em>I preached this homily at the Day Mass of Holy Pascha in 2004 and thought I might share it with you today.<\/em><br \/>\nChrist is risen!<br \/>\nChrist is risen!<br \/>\nChrist is risen!<br \/>\nWe have in past years,<br \/>\nat this morning sacrifice of Pascha,<br \/>\nlingered over the chants of the Church,<br \/>\ntaking each one in turn,<br \/>\nto hold them over in our hearts<br \/>\nand so sing them with understanding<br \/>\n&#8212; Psallite sapienter! &#8212; says the psalmist.<br \/>\nSing so as to taste each word, sing so as to melt each syllable<br \/>\nin the warmth of a believing heart.<br \/>\nThere is wild honey in the chants of the Church,<br \/>\na honey made by holy bees buzzing in the garden of the Scriptures.<br \/>\nSing with understanding!<br \/>\nThe taste of each word will surprise and delight<br \/>\nthe palate of your soul.<br \/>\nIf it is our vocation to savour the chants of the Church at all times,<br \/>\nit is our surpassing joy to do so today,<br \/>\nfor Christ is risen.<br \/>\nThis morning, however,<br \/>\nI thought we might turn our hearts&#8217; attention to the Collect of the Mass,<br \/>\nto that ascending word of the Church:<br \/>\nfruit of the Word welcomed, and heard, and repeated in the night.<br \/>\nBy means of the Collect<br \/>\nwe, being collected together in one place,<br \/>\npass over all together with Christ to the Father.<br \/>\nOur many prayers, prayers secret and hidden,<br \/>\nour groanings and our tears,<br \/>\nour supplications and our praises,<br \/>\nare collected and bound like a spring bouquet with a single band<br \/>\nto be lifted before the throne of grace<br \/>\nthat we might find help in time of need (cf. Heb 4:16),<br \/>\nfor Christ is risen!<br \/>\nOur hearts are set on heavenly things (cf. Col 3:2)<br \/>\nand fixed, already, here and now<br \/>\nin &#8220;the sanctuary not made by hands&#8221; (Heb 9:24) ,<br \/>\nin the holy place beyond the veil (cf. Heb 6:19)<br \/>\n&#8220;where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf,<br \/>\nhaving become a High Priest forever<br \/>\nafter the order of Melchisedech&#8221; (Heb 6:19).<br \/>\nChrist is risen!<br \/>\n&#8220;O God, on this day,<br \/>\nthrough Your only-begotten Son,<br \/>\nYou over overcame death<br \/>\nand opened for us the gate of eternal life;<br \/>\nGrant, we pray,<br \/>\nthat in celebrating the solemn feast of the resurrection of the Lord,<br \/>\nwe may, by the newness that comes from Your Spirit,<br \/>\nrise again in the light of life.&#8221;<br \/>\nGod has done two things in the resurrection of his only-begotten Son.<br \/>\nHe has overcome death.<br \/>\n&#8220;Christ is risen from the dead,&#8221;<br \/>\nsings the Eastern Church,<br \/>\n&#8220;trampling on death by death,<br \/>\nand on those in the tombs bestowing life.&#8221;<br \/>\nThis, Saint John Chrysostom, made clear for us at Lauds<br \/>\nin words unparalleled power and jubilation.<br \/>\nChrist is risen!<br \/>\nHe has also opened for us the gate of eternal life.<br \/>\nThe gate closed to Father Adam and Mother Eve<br \/>\nis thrown open by Christ.<br \/>\nThe garden of God&#8217;s delight is given back to us<br \/>\nand at the gate stands the Gardener &#8220;all radiant and ruddy,<br \/>\ndistinguished among ten thousand.<br \/>\nHis head is the finest gold;<br \/>\nHis locks are wavy, black as raven.<br \/>\nHis eyes are like doves<br \/>\nbeside springs of water. . . .<br \/>\nHis appearance is like Lebanon,<br \/>\nchoice as the cedars.<br \/>\nHis speech is most sweet,<br \/>\nand He is altogether desirable&#8221; (Ct 5:10-12, 16).<br \/>\nChrist is risen!<br \/>\nToday is the festival of the open gate,<br \/>\nthe solemnity of the open tomb,<br \/>\nthe epiphany of the open heart,<br \/>\nfor Christ is risen!<br \/>\nWhat does the Church,<br \/>\nmoved, as always, by the Spirit, ask today?<br \/>\n&#8220;Grant, we pray,<br \/>\nthat in celebrating the solemn feast of the resurrection of the Lord,<br \/>\nwe may, by the newness that comes from your Spirit,<br \/>\nrise again in the light of life.&#8221;<br \/>\nThe newness that comes from the Holy Spirit!<br \/>\nThere is no place here for anything old.<br \/>\n&#8220;Cleanse out the old leaven, &#8221; says the Apostle,<br \/>\n&#8220;so that you may be a new lump&#8221; (1 Cor 5:7).<br \/>\nNo place today for the sagging, the creaky,<br \/>\nthe stinking, and the wilted!<br \/>\nNo place for the decrepitude of sin!<br \/>\nNew hearts and new minds!<br \/>\nAnd in your mouths a new song &#8212; praise to our God,<br \/>\nfor Christ is risen!<br \/>\n&#8220;If anyone is in Christ,<br \/>\nhe is a new creation;<br \/>\nthe old has passsed away,<br \/>\nbehold the new has come&#8221; (2 Cor 5:17),<br \/>\nfor Christ is risen!<br \/>\nThe second part of the petition,<br \/>\n&#8221; . . . that we may rise again in the light of life,&#8221;<br \/>\nlifts us up, projects us from our tombs,<br \/>\nsends us out of darkness into light,<br \/>\nout of death into life,<br \/>\nout of loneliness into communion,<br \/>\nout of death&#8217;s dark bands into the arms of the Father!<br \/>\nRise again!  Not tomorrow &#8212; today!<br \/>\nRise again!  Not in another place &#8212; but here!<br \/>\nRise again!  Even as He rose before us and rises in us,<br \/>\nand will call us on his Day to rise to glory!<br \/>\nChrist is risen!<br \/>\nLet the prayer of the one Bride<br \/>\nbecome today the prayer of each.<br \/>\nLet the prayer of the Mother Church of us all<br \/>\nbecome today the prayer of those born anew of water and the Spirit!<br \/>\nPass into the prayer of the Church,<br \/>\nholding nothing back,<br \/>\nand Christ will pass into you, holding nothing back,<br \/>\nfor Christ is risen!<br \/>\nChrist is risen!<br \/>\nChrist is risen!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I preached this homily at the Day Mass of Holy Pascha in 2004 and thought I might share it with you today.
