You taught and sanctified<br \/>\nObservance of this Lenten tide;<br \/>\nBe pleased our fast to consecrate,<br \/>\nAnd by it mend our broken state.<br \/>\nNow unto Paradise once more,<br \/>\nBy penitence our souls restore;<br \/>\nWithout the gates our souls were thrust<br \/>\nWhere thorns and toil turned pride to dust.<br \/>\nBe with your Church in saving pow&#8217;r<br \/>\nIn this her death and rising hour;<br \/>\nWhen for the sins of bygone days,<br \/>\nWith Word-pierced heart she weeps and prays.<br \/>\nFor all our grievous past offence,<br \/>\nYour gracious pardon, Lord, dispense;<br \/>\nHenceforth, O gentle Guardian, shield<br \/>\nFrom sin each sense by mercy sealed.<br \/>\nSo cleansed and chastened in your eyes,<br \/>\nBy this our gladsome sacrifice,<br \/>\nMay we for Pascha&#8217;s joys prepare,<br \/>\nWho now a joyful sorrow share.<br \/>\nInfuse us, Father, with your Breath,<br \/>\nThe Crucified&#8217;s last Gift in death;<br \/>\nThat in that Spirit we may raise<br \/>\nNew paschal hymns of living praise.
