The <em>dominicis passionis sacramenta<\/em> are the sacred signs and rites by which the mystery of the Lord&#8217;s Passion is made present in an efficacious manner.  The Collect uses the word <em>peragere<\/em>, which means, among other things, to carry out, to enact, or to perform.  It is by worthily carrying out the sacred liturgy that the fruit of the Passion of Christ is communicated to our souls, that is, the pardon of our sins.<br \/>\n<strong>Omnipotens sempiterne Deus,<br \/>\nda nobis ita dominicae passionis sacramenta peragere,<br \/>\nut indulgentiam percipere mereamur.<br \/>\nPer Dominum nostrum Iesum Christum Filium tuum,<br \/>\nqui tecum vivit et regnat in unitate Spiritus Sancti,<br \/>\nDeus, per omnia saecula saeculorum.<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>The Marquess of Bute gives this:<\/em><br \/>\nO Almighty and everlasting God,<br \/>\ngive us grace so to use the solemn and mysterious memorial<br \/>\nof the Lord&#8217;s Suffering,<br \/>\nthat the same may be unto us<br \/>\na means whereby worthily to win Thy forgiveness.<br \/>\nThrough the Same our Lord Jesus Christ Thy Son,<br \/>\nWho liveth and reigneth with Thee,<br \/>\nin the unity of the Holy Ghost,<br \/>\none God, world without end.<br \/>\n<em>Note that he renders &#8220;dominicis passionis sacramenta&#8221; as &#8220;the solemn and mysterious memorial of the Lord&#8217;s Passion.&#8221;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Monsignor Knox offers a translation that is, at once, succinct and poetic.  For &#8220;dominicis passionis sacramenta&#8221; he gives, &#8220;this showing forth of the Lord&#8217;s Passion.&#8221;<\/em><br \/>\nSo pass we, O God eternal,<br \/>\nthrough this showing forth of our Lord&#8217;s Passion,<br \/>\nthat we may win his gift of pardon.<br \/>\nThrough the same Jesus Christ, thy Son, our Lord,<br \/>\nwho is God, living and reigning with thee,<br \/>\nin the unity of the Holy Spirit,<br \/>\nforever and ever.<br \/>\n<em>And here is my own attempt: <\/em><br \/>\nAlmighty and eternal God,<br \/>\ngrant that we may so carry out<br \/>\nthe sacred rites of the Passion of the Lord<br \/>\nas to be found worthy of your gracious pardon.<br \/>\nThrough our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,<br \/>\nwho lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,<br \/>\nGod forever and ever.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tuesday of Holy Week The Collect for Holy Tuesday merits special attention.
