\"23.4.2010:
\nThe hymn Vexilla Regis<\/em> was composed in 569 A.D. by Saint Venantius Fortunatus<\/a> on the occasion of the solemn reception of a Relic of the True Cross by Queen Saint Radegonde<\/a> before the consecration of her monastic church at Poitiers. It is, by origin, a processional hymn. The Church sings it at Vespers throughout Passiontide. The translation given here is taken from “The Psalter of Sarum”: London 1852. The feast of Saint Radegonde<\/a> is August 13th; that of Saint Venantius Fortunatus is December 14th.<\/p>\n

The Royal Banner forward goes,
\nThe mystic Cross refulgent glows:
\nWhere He, in Flesh, flesh who made,
\nUpon the Tree of pain is laid.<\/p>\n

Behold! The nails with anguish fierce,
\nHis outstretched arms and vitals pierce:
\nHere our redemption to obtain,
\nThe Mighty Sacrifice is slain.<\/p>\n

Here the fell spear his wounded side
\nWith ruthless onset opened wide:
\nTo wash us in that cleansing flood,
\nThence mingled Water flowed, and Blood.<\/p>\n

Fulfilled is all that David told
\nIn true prophetic song, of old:
\nUnto the nations, lo! saith he,
\nOur God hath reign\u00e8d from the Tree.<\/p>\n

O Tree! In radiant beauty bright!
\nWith regal purple meetly dight!
\nThou chosen stem! divinely graced,
\nWhich hath those Holy Limbs embraced!<\/p>\n

How blest thine arms, beyond compare,
\nWhich Earth’s Eternal Ransom bare!
\nThat Balance where His Body laid,
\nThe spoil of vanquished Hell outweighed.<\/p>\n

O Cross! all hail! sole hope, abide
\nWith us now in this Passion-tide:
\nNew grace in pious hearts implant,
\nAnd pardon to the guilty grant!<\/p>\n

Hail wondrous Altar! Victim hail!
\nThy Glorious Passion shall avail!
\nWhere death Life’s very Self endured,
\nYet life by that same Death secured.<\/p>\n

Thee, mighty Trinity! One God!
\nLet every living creature laud;
\nWhom by the Cross Thou dost deliver,
\nO guide and govern now and ever!
