At First Vespers<\/strong><\/p>\n

Holy Father Saint Augustine,
\nHearken to thy children’s cry;
\nPlea for us as now thou standest
\nNear the throne of God on high:
\nGuide thy flock, O loving Shepherd,
\nWho to us in Christ art nigh.<\/p>\n

Holy poverty’s true lover,
\nAll Christ’s poor ones hymn thy praise,
\nTruth’s own champion and defender,
\nLoved by all who seek her ways;
\nScripture’s God-enlightened teacher,
\nAll her wealth thy pen displays.<\/p>\n

Lighting depths obscure and hidden,
\nThou dost break us heavenly bread
\nFrom the doctrine of our Saviour,
\nFrom the gracious words He said;
\nWith the Psalms life-giving nectar
\nAll who learn of thee are fed.<\/p>\n

For the white-robed canon’s choir
\nLaws of wisdom thou didst frame:
\nThose who love thy words and keep them,
\nThy sure patronage may claim;
\nSafe, they tread the ways of Sion,
\nCalling on thy worthy name.<\/p>\n

Glory to the King of Ages;
\nPraise and triumph to his reign;
\nJoining with the choir of Angels,
\nLet us sound our answering strain;
\nE’en now, ‘neath our Patron’s banner,
\nCitizens of heaven’s domain. Amen.<\/p>\n

V. Blessed is the man that Thou chastenest, O Lord.
\nR. And teachest in Thy law.<\/p>\n

Antiphon: On this day the holy prelate Augustine was set free from the bonds of the flesh and received amongst the Angels; and there for ever he doth rejoice with the Apostles and Prophets; full of whose spirit he was able to expound upon earth the heavenly mysteries which they had set forth; and following in whose steps he shone pre-eminent as a dispenser of the Word of God.<\/p>\n

Let us pray.
\nO God, who openedst the eyes of blessed Augustine to the deep mysteries of Thy wisdom, and in his heart didst set alight the fire of divine charity: give us grace at his intercession that seeing clearly in Thy light, and burning with godly love, we may run in the way of Thy commandments.
