The image was painted by the graced hand of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mtangel.edu\/ikons\/index.html\">Brother Claude Lane<\/a>, O.S.B., of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mtangel.edu\/monastery\/index.html\">Mount Angel Abbey<\/a>.<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>PREFACE OF OUR HOLY FATHER, SAINT BENEDICT<\/strong><br \/>\nTruly it is right and just, our duty and our salvation,<br \/>\nalways and everywhere to give you thanks,<br \/>\nLord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God,<br \/>\nthrough Christ our Lord.<br \/>\nYou raised up the holy abbot Benedict,<br \/>\nas a teacher of the steps of humility<br \/>\nby which a countless number of his sons and daughters<br \/>\nhave reached the love which drives out all fear.<br \/>\nPreferring nothing to the love of Christ,<br \/>\nhe recognized Christ in the sick and in the stranger,<br \/>\nin the poor and in the pilgrim.<br \/>\nPraising you seven times by day, and even in the night,<br \/>\nhe placed all his hope in you,<br \/>\nand taught us never to despair of your mercy.<br \/>\nEven today, his words distill a holy wisdom,<br \/>\ninflame us with longing for life everlasting,<br \/>\nand inspire us to sing your praise<br \/>\nin the joy of the Holy Spirit.<br \/>\nTherefore, in the sight of the angels,<br \/>\nwith heart and mind in harmony with our voices,<br \/>\nwe exalt your glory forever,<br \/>\nas we ceaselessly proclaim:<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In preparation for the great monastic solemnity that began with First Vespers this evening, I offer this proper Preface for the meditation and joy of all who have some claim on the paternity of Saint Benedict.
