{"id":2853,"date":"2009-06-24T11:59:28","date_gmt":"2009-06-24T11:59:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vultuschristi.org\/index.php\/2009\/06\/the-birthday-of-the-bridegroom\/"},"modified":"2009-06-24T11:59:28","modified_gmt":"2009-06-24T11:59:28","slug":"the-birthday-of-the-bridegroom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vultuschristi.org\/index.php\/2009\/06\/the-birthday-of-the-bridegroom\/","title":{"rendered":"The Birthday of the Bridegroom&#8217;s Friend"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vultuschristi.org\/agentileschi3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"agentileschi3.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/vultuschristi.org\/agentileschi3-thumb.jpg\" width=\"427\" height=\"300\"\/><\/a><br \/>\nToday is the birthday of the Bridegroom&rsquo;s friend:<br \/>\nan inbreaking of joy,<br \/>\nwild joy, reckless joy, heaven-sent joy.<br \/>\nthe joy of a divine surprise.<br \/>\nA baby boy has come into the world.<br \/>\n&ldquo;His name is John&rdquo; (Lk 1:63).<br \/>\nNothing will ever again be the same.<br \/>\nElizabeth, having already faded into old age, flowers and bears fruit.<br \/>\nAll the neighbours talked.<br \/>\nOur God is the Lord of the impossible.<br \/>\nOur God is astonishing,<br \/>\namazing in all that he does.<br \/>\nHe gives hope to the hopeless,<br \/>\nsends his mercy like a river into every dry and barren wasteland,<br \/>\nand fills the womb of one long past childbearing<br \/>\nwith the energy of a infant kicking<br \/>\nand leaping for joy.<br \/>\nZechariah astonished, loses his speech,<br \/>\nand regains it in a flood of praise.<br \/>\nZechariah&rsquo;s canticle: a priestly prayer of blessing<br \/>\nrising to meet the Dayspring that rises over the darkness.<br \/>\nDazzling Dayspring dealing death to death,<br \/>\ngiving light to those who sit in darkness!<br \/>\nRays of mercy kissing every uplifted face,<br \/>\nbeams of brightness for uncertain steps,<br \/>\nand in every heart long chilled by fear<br \/>\na strange and wondrous warming.<br \/>\nThe smell of incense hangs about Zechariah:<br \/>\nthe fragrance of the Temple.<br \/>\nIn his eyes one sees the glimmer of what he saw:<br \/>\nGabriel who stands in the presence of God.<br \/>\nThe vision of an angel is something not erased.<br \/>\nIt leaves one with a perpetual look of surprise.<br \/>\nIt causes one to utter blessings<br \/>\nand, at every moment, to break into bits of eucharistic song.<br \/>\n&ldquo;Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel!&rdquo;<br \/>\nThe Church finds nothing better than to repeat<br \/>\nZechariah&rsquo;s canticle<br \/>\nday after day, morning after morning,<br \/>\nmaking it her unchanging sunrise Gospel,<br \/>\nher preparation for the Great Thanksgiving:<br \/>\nthe tender mercy of God<br \/>\ngiven for our eating and drinking<br \/>\nin the Holy Bread and in the Precious Chalice.<br \/>\nThe brightness that rises like the dawn<br \/>\nover every altar.<br \/>\nJohn is here today.<br \/>\nHe is present at every advent of the Word.<br \/>\nHe was there when first the Word came.<br \/>\nHe is there when the Word comes<br \/>\nuttered in the syllables of poor human language<br \/>\nand veiled by bread and wine.<br \/>\nHe is there at every secret advent of the Word:<br \/>\nthe visitations of which we dare not speak,<br \/>\nlest in disclosing them<br \/>\nwe lose something of their healing virtue.<br \/>\nHe will be there when,<br \/>\nat the end of time the Word returns,<br \/>\nall-glorious,<br \/>\nto judge the living and the dead.<br \/>\nBlessed be the Lord, the God of Israel<br \/>\nwho has made John indispensable<br \/>\nfor Israel,<br \/>\nfor us,<br \/>\nfor the Church.<br \/>\nTo each of you today,<br \/>\nMother Church wishes nothing less<br \/>\nthan the joy of John.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today is the birthday of the Bridegroom&rsquo;s friend: an inbreaking of joy, wild joy, reckless joy, heaven-sent joy. the joy of a divine surprise.
