I\"Mother_of_Good_Counsel.jpg\" just came up to my room from the basilica after having celebrated the 6:30 p.m. parish Mass. Today is the liturgical memorial of Our Mother of Good Counsel<\/a>. I used the Mass of Our Lady of Good Counsel in the Italian Collection of Masses of the Blessed Virgin Mary<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Although I used the Mass given in the Collection of Masses of the Blessed Virgin Mary<\/em>, I prefer the texts of the Mass given in the supplement to the 1962 Roman Missal among the Masses By Special Grant In Certain Places<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The petition of the Collect is especially beautiful. We beseech God to grant that we may never depart from the counsels of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and by this means order our lives after His own Heart:<\/p>\n

O God, who hast given the Mother of Thy Beloved Son
\nto be likewise unto us a mother,
\nand hast made famous this her beauteous image,
\nby causing it miraculously to appear in our midst:
\ngrant unto us, we beseech Thee,
\nnever to depart from her counsels and,
\nby this means ordering our lives after Thine own Heart,
\none day happily to reach our heavenly fatherland.<\/em><\/p>\n

One who seeks counsel of the Mother of God is never disappointed and never without hope. She is the most compassionate and effective of all counselors. The liturgy takes a wonderful promise from the book of Proverbs, and places it in Our Lady’s mouth: “He that shall find me shall find life, and shall have salvation from the Lord” (Prov 8:35).<\/p>\n

The verse that follows is also significant: “But he that shall sin against me, shall hurt his own soul. All that hate me love death” (Prov 8:36). One who sins against Mary, hurts his own soul. One who hates Mary loves death. The place given \u2014 or not given \u2014 to the Virgin Mother of God is a fundamental criterion in the discernment of spirits. The love of Mary is a wellspring of healing and of life. Love Mary, then, and all the rest will be given you besides.<\/p>\n

Here is my translation of the Mass of Our Lady of Good Counsel as given in the Collection of Masses of the Blessed Virgin Mary<\/em>:<\/p>\n

ENTRANCE ANTIPHON<\/p>\n

I called upon God and the spirit of wisdom came to me;
\nI learned without guile
\nand I impart without grudging;
\nI do not hide her riches (Wis 7:7b, 13).<\/p>\n

COLLECT<\/p>\n

O Lord, Thou who knowest
\nthat the thoughts of mortals are full of fear and uncertainty,
\nthrough the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
\nfrom whom Thy Son took flesh,
\ngrant us Thy counsel
\nthat we may be made to recognize
\nthe things that are pleasing to Thee
\nand be directed in all our works.
\nThrough our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son,
\nwho lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Ghost,
\nGod, forever and ever.<\/p>\n

OFFERTORY ANTIPHON<\/p>\n

Be mindful, O Virgin Mother,
\nto speak good things in the presence of God on our behalf,
\nthat He may turn away His anger from us (cf. Jer 18:20).<\/p>\n

PRAYER OVER THE OFFERINGS<\/p>\n

Let the Spirit of Counsel, O Lord,
\nwho so wondrously overshadowed the Blessed Virgin, Thy handmaid,
\nmake these gifts reverently offered
\nacceptable to Thee.
\nThrough Christ our Lord.<\/p>\n

PREFACE<\/p>\n

Truly it is right and just, our duty and our salvation,
\nalways and everywhere to give Thee thanks,
\nLord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God.
\nHow abundantly Thou didst fill the most blessed Virgin Mary
\nwith the gifts of the Holy Ghost
\nto make her the worthy
\nmother and companion of the Redeemer!
\nFormed by these gifts
\nshe sought Thy will unceasingly
\nand faithfully carried it out;
\njoyfully did she magnify Thy mercy
\nand hold fast to the counsel of Thy lovingkindness
\nto restore all things in Christ.
\nThrough whom the ranks of Angels adore Thy majesty,
