A Long Awaited Prayer<\/h2>\n

Today is Pentecost Tuesday. As we noted last year<\/a>, for some of us, the Post-Communion prayer of today’s Mass is one we look forward to all year long.<\/p>\n

Mentes nostras, qu\u01fdsumus, D\u00f3mine, Sp\u00edritus Sanctus div\u00ednis r\u00e9paret sacram\u00e9ntis: quia ipse est rem\u00edssio \u00f3mnium peccat\u00f3rum.<\/em><\/p>\n

We beseech Thee, O Lord, that the Holy Spirit repair our minds with divine sacraments, for He Himself is the remission of all sins.<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Holy Spirit Repairs Us<\/h2>\n

Think of that! The Holy Spirit is the remission of all sins! Furthermore, He repairs us. How does He repair us? By coming to us as the remission of all sins. How does He do this? By the Divine Sacraments<\/em> (in context: the Mass, which has just been offered, the Eucharist which has just been received, Baptism which was just given on the Vigil of Pentecost, and Confirmation which immediately followed Baptism). These sacraments repair <\/em>us.<\/p>\n

Why Repair?<\/h2>\n

Why do we need reparation? Are we a building that has fallen into disrepair? Yes! We are the temple of God which has been broken down by sin. When God created everything, He made the heavenly Jerusalem, the ethereal heaven, and in it a throne meant for a man<\/em>. It was all fire and light, so sublime that the very matter of it was transparent to the radiance of God. It is the source of the pattern that Moses saw on the Mount, and hence it was commanded him: “See and make according to their pattern that you are being shown on the mountain” (Exodus 25:40; Hebrews 8:5).<\/p>\n

At the same time that God made the heavenly temple, He also made the earth: grosser, indeed, in matter, less open to revealing the spiritual. From out of this material universe, He separated an earth to cultivate it so it could bring forth life. And He planted a garden on this earth, and He made man \u2013 male and female He created them \u2013 and He commanded them to tend the Garden, for it was to become a mirror of the ethereal, heavenly Jerusalem. They were to expand it through the entire earth, and one of humanity would sit on the heavenly throne.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>He created them, moreover, in the state of grace. He dwelt within them. They were His temple, and their mission was to extend a copy of the heavenly temple \u2013 the reality of which dwelt in them, both separately and corporately \u2013 throughout the whole cosmos. They were to be the priests of the cosmos, offering it to God, and through them heaven was to descend to earth and man was to ascend to heaven.<\/p>\n

We know how that plan was foiled. How broken poor human nature became! A generation after Adam, brother killed brother. Within six generations of Adam, Lamech was already practising bigamy and slaying men and boys for trifles. Need we speak of Babel, of Sodom, of Lot? And now we have reached the point where we so deny our poor broken human nature that we know not even what a man and a woman is, nor a mother and father, nor the relationship between children and parents, nor even that we have a nature, so confused are we. Poor human nature suffers so much, and the very matter of our bodies seems to rebel against the spirit. Thus:<\/p>\n

The expectation of the creature waiteth for the revelation of the sons of God.\u00a0 For the creature was made subject to vanity: not willingly, but by reason of him that made it subject, in hope. Because the creature also itself shall be delivered from the servitude of corruption, into the liberty of the glory of the children of God.\u00a0 For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers together until now.\u00a0 Not only this, but we ourselves also, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we eagerly await our adoption, the redemption of our bodies. For in hope we were saved. (Rom 8:19-24)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

To Make Us a Beautiful Temple<\/h2>\n

\"The<\/a>The Holy Spirit begins His work of reparation with the very creature whose sin spread decay, poor human beings. He is the forgiveness of our sins! By His Divine Sacraments, He repairs us, making us a beautiful temple, joined to the Temple of Jesus\u2019 Body, the Lamb standing as if slain and now reigning in the ethereal temple of heaven. Though our bodies only experience an over-flow of this, so to speak, as the first fruits, the Church is always praying for health of soul and body<\/strong>, and the effects of the Holy Spirit in our souls also give us the first taste of the life that shall reign in our mortal bodies.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
