Hearing the names of these English Cistercian martyrs read out here in Rome was a truly Catholic Moment. <\/em><br \/>\n<strong>From the Romano\u2013Cistercian Martyrology:<\/strong><br \/>\nIn England, in the sixteenth century, the passion of a number of Cistercian monks cruelly put to death for different pretexts by order of King Henry VIII.<br \/>\nIn the months of March and May 1537, died for the Catholic faith:<br \/>\n\u2014 the Lord Abbot of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.british-history.ac.uk\/report.asp?compid=38004\">Kirkstead<\/a>, Dom John Harrison and his brethren Dom Richard Wade, Dom William Small, and Dom Henry Jenkinson;<br \/>\n\u2014 the Lord Abbot of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whalleyabbey.co.uk\/history.asp\">Whalley<\/a>, Dom John Paslew and his brethren, Dom William Haydock and Dom Richard Eastgate.<br \/>\nAlso died: the Lord Abbot of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theheritagetrail.co.uk\/abbeys\/fountains_abbey.htm\">Fountains<\/a> and a monk of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.british-history.ac.uk\/report.asp?compid=38005\">Louth Park<\/a>.<br \/>\nIn the following year 1538, were martyred:<br \/>\n\u2014 the Lord Abbot of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.british-history.ac.uk\/report.asp?compid=40037\">Woburn<\/a>, Dom Robert Hobbes and the monks Dom Rudolph Barnes and Dom Laurence Blunham.<br \/>\nRecognized as authentic confessors of the faith:<br \/>\nDom Thomas Mudd, monk of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theheritagetrail.co.uk\/abbeys\/jervaulx_abbey.htm\">Jervaulx<\/a>, who died on September 7, 1583;<br \/>\nDom John Almond, who died on April 18, 1585,<br \/>\nand Dom Gilbert Browne, the last Abbot of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theheritagetrail.co.uk\/abbeys\/sweetheart%20abbey.htm\">Sweet Heart<\/a> (<em>Dulce Cor<\/em>), who died on March 14, 1612.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was deeply moved when the martyrology for today, March 8th, was read in Chapter.
