Although not strictly literal, my translations do adhere to the sense of the traditional Latin texts.  I have prayed with these texts and sung them for a number of years.  The melodies given in the <u>Liber Hymnarius<\/u> work well, although minor adaptations of the neums are needed in a few instances.<br \/>\n<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/vultuschristi.org\/0altarpi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"0altarpi.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/vultuschristi.org\/0altarpi-thumb.jpg\" width=\"416\" height=\"250\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Vespers I<\/strong><br \/>\nKind Maker of the world, give ear,<br \/>\nAccept the prayer and own the tear,<br \/>\nBefore your Seat of Mercy spent<br \/>\nIn this most holy fast of Lent.<br \/>\nThe secrets of each life you see:<br \/>\nYou measure our infirmity;<br \/>\nTeach wisdom in the inward parts;<br \/>\nRefresh and heal our broken hearts.<br \/>\nOur sins are manifold and sore;<br \/>\nOur spirits now to health restore;<br \/>\nAnd for your Name&rsquo;s sake, make each soul,<br \/>\nThat feels and owns its sickness, whole.<br \/>\nGive watchfulness o&rsquo;er every sense<br \/>\nGive grace for outward abstinence,<br \/>\nThat far from Egypt&rsquo;s spread of sin<br \/>\nThe soul may keep her fast within.<br \/>\nHear us, O Blessed Trinity!<br \/>\nShine bright within, O Unity!<br \/>\nThat at the end of Forty Days<br \/>\nOur healing may become your praise.
