The Antiphon, O quantum in cruce<\/em>, found in Laudes Vespertinae<\/em>, the Cistercian collection for Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, is the perfect meditation on the Holy Father’s Lenten Message. The melody is full of compunction and a tender, pleading love. In the past I have often had the schola <\/em>sing it with a faux\u2013bourdon (a \"CrocifissioneBagnacavallotrecento.jpg\"<\/a>fourth below the melody), changing the si b\u00e9mols (flats) to si naturals. The effect is extraordinary.<\/p>\n

Here is an English translation of the Latin text:
\nO, how much upon the Cross
\ndidst thy bowed head, O Christ,
\nthy hands flung wide,
\nthy open heart
\nbreathe forth love.
\nSon of God who didst come to redeem the lost,
\ncondemn not the redeemed
\ncrying out to Thee from the valley of tears.
