\nwho reclined on the breast of the Lord at supper:
\nBlessed the Apostle unto whom were made known
\nthe secret things of heaven;
\nto the ends of the earth he has spread the words of life.
\nCOLLECT
\nO God who,
\nthrough the blessed apostle John,
\nunlocked for us the hidden secrets of your Word,
\ngrant, we beseech you,
\nthat we may grasp with fuller understanding
\nwhat he so wondrously proclaimed.
\nThrough our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
\nwho lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
\nGod forever and ever.<\/p>\n


\nGENERAL INTERCESSIONS
\nThat the Church in East and West
\nmay bear a united and many-splendoured witness
\nto the light of the Word made flesh, and so reflect his glory in the world,
\nto the Lord we pray: R. Jesus, Son of Mary, hear us.
\nThat world leaders of good will
\nmay collaborate sincerely and effectively in the pursuit of peace,
\nto the Lord we pray: R. Jesus, Son of Mary, hear us.
\nThat those who suffer may lift their eyes
\nto the Son of Man lifted up on the tree of the Cross;
\nthat those who seek out Jesus by night
\nmay see the Light that triumphs over every darkness;
\nand that those who thirst may recognize in Christ the gift of God,
\nto the Lord we pray: R. Jesus, Son of Mary, hear us.
\nThat, like Saint John the Evangelist,
\ntheologians and preachers may rest upon the Sacred Heart of Christ
\nand learn, in the silence of love, the secrets of the Word made flesh,
\nfor the joy of the whole Church,
\nto the Lord we pray: R. Jesus, Son of Mary, hear us.
\nThat we who have assembled today to listen to the Word
\nand to partake of the living Bread come down from heaven,
\nmay receive the message of the Beloved Disciple
\nwho, with Mary, stood at the foot of the Cross,
\nand so come to know and believe the love God has for us,
\nto the Lord we pray: R. Jesus, Son of Mary, hear us.

\nHoly Father (Jn 17:11),
\nGod whom no one has seen (Jn 1:18),
\ncast your bright beams of light upon the Church:
\nthat, being illumined by the teaching
\nof your blessed apostle and evangelist Saint John,
\nwe may know and believe the love you have for us (1 Jn 4:16),
\nand, at length, attain to that perfect love
\nthat casts out fear (1 Jn 4:17-18),
\nand to the glory which you gave your only Son
\nbefore the foundation of the world (Jn 17:24).

\nto make holy the gifts we have offered,
\nthat we, partaking of the banquet of this supper,
\nmay drink deeply of the mysteries of your Eternal Word

\nyou revealed to the Apostle John.

\nTruly it is right and just, our duty and our salvation,
\nalways, here and everywhere to give you thanks,
\nLord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God,
\nas we celebrate the memory of Saint John the Evangelist.
\nThe Lord bestowed on John
\na lasting place and privilege among his own.
\nAs he hung upon the cross
\nChrist willed that his beloved disciple
\nshould be a son to his own Mother.
\nThe love with which Christ loved him
\ntransformed him from fisherman to disciple
\nand gave him more than mortal insight
\nto perceive and proclaim
\nthe uncreated Godhead of Christ the Word.
\nAnd so, with your blessed apostle,
\nwe join the citizens of heaven
\nin this, the ageless hymn of your glory:
