\nThis seventeenth century Spanish painting is remarkable in that it depicts Saint Joachim and Saint Anne together with the Immaculate Conception, their daughter full of grace. It is likely that this painting was made for a Carthusian monastery. It is now in the National Gallery of Scotland.

\nI will greatly rejoice in the Lord,

\nprepared a worthy dwelling for your Son
\nand, foreseeing his death on the Cross,

\nthat, by means of the humble prayer of the Rosary,
\nthey may learn the secret of peace and bear witness, in every situation,

For the leaders of nations;
\nthat they may foster reverence for the gift of life
\nin the unborn, the unwanted, the sick, and the dying,

\nthat the intercession of the Immaculate Virgin Mary
\nmay bring them comfort, hope, and a joy that no one will take way,

\nthat, together with the New Eve,
\nwe may adhere to the response of the New Adam,
\nuttered from the Tree of the Cross
\nand made present in this and in every Eucharist,

\nwho, walking in the paradise you had created,

PREFACE
\nTruly it is right and just, our duty and our salvation,
\nalways and everywhere to give you thanks,
\nLord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God.
\nYou kept the Blessed Virgin Mary
\nfree from the mark of original sin;
\nyou endowed her with the fullness of your grace
\nso as to make her a worthy mother of your Son.
\nIn Mary, you mark the beginning of your Church,
\nwhich is to be presented to Christ
\nas his fair and spotless bride.
\nPurest of virgins, she was to bear your Son,
\nthe innocent Lamb who takes away our sins.
\nYou chose her before all other women
\nto be for your people an advocate of grace
\nand a pattern of holiness.
\nAnd therefore, united with the choirs of angels,

\nMay the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ
