Mass of Saint Peter Claver, Priest

O God, who made blessed Peter the slave of slaves,
strengthening him with marvelous charity and patience,
at his intercession, grant that all of us,
in seeking those things that belong to Jesus Christ,
may love our neighbour truly and in deed.
Through the same our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, forever and ever.

The Spirit of God is upon me; he has anointed me.
He sent me to bring good news to the poor,
and to heal the brokenhearted,
to proclaim pardon for captives,
and to free those in prison (Lk 4:18; Is 61:1).

Brothers and sisters, let us acknowledge our sins,
that we may be ready to celebrate the sacred mysteries.

You were sent to heal the contrite of heart.
Kyrie, eleison.

You came to call sinners.
Christe, eleison.

You sit at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us.
Kyrie, eleison.

May Almighty God have mercy on us,
and lead us, with our sins forgiven,
into eternal life.

That the Church in every place
may be the servant of the poor and the downtrodden,
and, like Saint Peter Claver,
seek to bring the liberty of the Gospel to captives,
to the Lord we pray: Christ, hear us. R. CHRIST, GRACIOUSLY HEAR US.

That the leaders of nations and all public servants
may work to eradicate racism
and the exploitation of the weak by the greedy,
to the Lord we pray: Christ, hear us. R. CHRIST, GRACIOUSLY HEAR US.

That the oppressed may find in their pastors
strong voices to plead their cause;
that the sick may find among the disciples of Christ
ministers of healing and of compassion;
and that people of every race and culture may find in the Church
a community of humble dialogue and of peace,
to the Lord we pray: Christ, hear us. R. CHRIST, GRACIOUSLY HEAR US.

That all who devote themselves to the African-American community,
may find in the example of Saint Peter Claver an inspiration,
and in his intercession a source of strength,
to the Lord we pray: Christ, hear us. R. CHRIST, GRACIOUSLY HEAR US.

That priests called, like the Apostle Paul,
to fatherhood in Christ through the Gospel,
may never shirk the responsibilities laid upon them
but, rather, carry them manfully in the joy of the Holy Spirit,
to the Lord we pray: Christ, hear us. R. CHRIST, GRACIOUSLY HEAR US.

That by the healing mysteries
of Christ’s Sacred Body and Precious Blood,
we may be delivered from the power of evil,
to the Lord we pray: Christ, hear us. R. CHRIST, GRACIOUSLY HEAR US.

Almighty and ever–living God,
who, through your only–begotten Son,
have called us to a holy liberty,
mercifully grant that we who confess Him as Lord of the Sabbath
may conform our lives to His teaching,
and, at length, enter into your rest.
Through Christ our Lord.

Receive, Lord, the gifts of your people,
and grant that we who celebrate
the work of your Son’s immense charity,
may be strengthened in love of you and of our neighbour,
according to the example of blessed Peter.
Through Christ our Lord.

It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation,
always and everywhere to give you thanks,
Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God,
through Christ our Lord.

Christ has never ceased to call generous disciples;
He sends them out to save all peoples
by the light and strength of the Gospel.
Saint Peter was chosen by the Holy Spirit
to dispense your word;
faithful and trusting he went to peoples far away.

You called him to be all things to everyone
so that the nations might become
a holy sacrifice, acceptable in your sight.

And so, united with him
and all the blessed inhabitants of heaven,
to you, O Father,
we raise the joyful hymn of praise:

I became all things to all people
to save at least some (1 Cor 9:22b).

Lord God, whose Son took upon Himself
the weakness of our humanity,
by the power of the Holy Spirit,
set our hearts ablaze with your charity
so that to the weak we may become weak
and thus gain them for Christ.
Who is Lord forever and ever.
